Average speed on Delhi roads is approximately 15 kms/hour which
is equal to the distance between Connaught Place and Tilak Nagar. If an autorickshaw were to run at this speed and if the
driver were to wait for a few minutes for passengers at the end
of each trip, he would cover 150 kms in 12 hours. By
this math, his honest earning would be barely Rs.4,650
a month. Note: An estimated 3 out of 4 auto drivers
hire an autorickshaw on a daily rental of Rs.300 from the
owner/financier. The figures presented above are for this
segment alone. Situation of owner-drivers is no better though.
Most of them are paying interest at the rate of 50-60% on their
loans to private financiers and loan-sharks. |
